Lessons from Numbers: God’s Care for Women

I’ve been sitting in the book of Numbers for weeks now. At first, I thought it was just laws, censuses, and instructions, but as I kept reading, God kept opening my eyes. Hidden inside all those details is a story of His care, especially for His daughters.

There’s a passage about a man from the half tribe of Manasseh. He died with no sons, only five daughters. By the customs of the time, that should have meant no inheritance for them. But these women were bold enough to come to Moses and ask, “Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives” (Numbers 27:4).

And God said, “The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance” (Numbers 27:7).

I love that. God did not just acknowledge them, He changed the law to make room for them. They received an allotment of land, a portion of the promise, even without a natural covering. And as the story unfolds, their names keep showing up. Every time the land and inheritances are mentioned, these women are remembered, because their boldness became part of the testimony of God’s justice and provision.

Later on, when the question came up about what would happen if they married outside their tribe, God again made a way to protect their inheritance. “No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another” (Numbers 36:7). Not only did He secure their land, but He also provided protection through marriage so that their portion remained intact.

Reading this has ministered to me so deeply. It reminds me that as a single woman, I am never without covering. God Himself is my protector, my provider, my keeper. He fights for me, He sustains me, and He will provide the right covering at the right time. Until then, He is enough.

The book of Numbers, a book many of us see as dry or full of laws, actually ends with a law written for women. That makes me smile. God was showing, even then, that He protects His daughters. He sees us, He values us, and He writes His care for us into His story.

So in this season, I hear Him whispering again: Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10). My job is not to worry about how it will all work out but to look to Him for all things. In Romans I am reminded that I can come boldly before His throne because He is my Father (Romans 8:15, Hebrews 4:16). In Isaiah He says He is my Husband (Isaiah 54:5). Until He brings what is next, He is my covering.

And that gives me peace. Because if He is the Author of my story, I can trust every word He writes.
