Who Is Speaking Your Name?

God often allows others to recognize what He is developing in you before the world ever sees it.

“One of the young men answered, ‘I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a valiant man, a warrior, eloquent, handsome, and the Lord is with him.'”

1 Samuel 16:18

This morning during my quiet time, I read a Scripture that wouldn’t leave me alone. It kept echoing in my spirit long after I closed my Bible. The verse was 1 Samuel 16:18, and the more I sat with it, the more God began revealing something I had never noticed before.

David had already been anointed by Samuel, but outwardly nothing had changed. He wasn’t king yet. He hadn’t defeated Goliath. He wasn’t leading Israel’s army. He had simply returned to tending his father’s sheep.

Then King Saul needed someone to play the lyre, and an unnamed young man spoke up.

“I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem…”

Those six words stopped me.

This servant wasn’t trying to describe David’s job.

He wasn’t introducing him as a shepherd.

He was describing who David was.

He called him a valiant man.

A warrior.

Eloquent.

Handsome.

And then he said something that overshadowed every other description:

“The Lord is with him.”

What amazes me is that David had no idea this conversation was happening.

He was simply being faithful in the field while someone else was speaking his name in the king’s court.

He wasn’t trying to be noticed.

He wasn’t promoting himself.

He wasn’t searching for an opportunity.

He was simply living the life God had called him to live.

Yet someone had been watching.

Someone had seen his character.

Someone had seen how he carried himself.

Someone had recognized the presence of God on his life.

That unnamed servant became the bridge between David’s hidden season and his next assignment.

I wonder how many of us are in that same season. Faithfully tending what God has placed in our hands, unaware that He is already preparing the conversation that will introduce us to our next assignment.

As I sat with this passage, I couldn’t help but ask myself:

Who is seeing us while we’re simply being faithful?

There are people observing our integrity that we may never know.

People noticing our excellence.

People watching how we respond under pressure.

People recognizing the presence of God in our lives without ever saying a word.

And one day, God may use one of those people to simply say,

“I know someone.”

That thought encouraged me more than I can explain.

Because it reminded me that I don’t have to spend my life trying to be seen.

My responsibility is simply to be faithful.

God is responsible for the introduction.

It also challenged me to think about what people see when they observe my life.

Do they see someone who reflects Christ?

Do they see integrity?

Do they see kindness?

Do they see wisdom?

Most importantly, would anyone be able to say,

“The Lord is with her.”

That is the reputation I want more than any title or accomplishment.

As I continue walking through this season of becoming, I realize that God is far more interested in developing my character than increasing my visibility.

Because when the opportunity comes, I don’t want to simply have the position.

I want to already be the person He has called me to be.

Maybe you’re in a season where you feel hidden.

Keep showing up.

Keep serving.

Keep worshiping.

Keep walking in obedience.

You never know who God is allowing to see your faithfulness.

Continue becoming the person God is shaping you to be. Your next opportunity may not begin with an application, an interview, or a promotion. It may begin with someone simply saying,

“I have seen them.”

And perhaps the greatest thing they will ever say about you is this:

“The Lord is with them.”
