Scripture Reference
Deuteronomy 8:3 (CSB): “He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then He gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
The Message puts it this way:
“He put you through hard times. He made you go hungry. Then He fed you with manna, something neither you nor your parents knew anything about, so you would learn that men and women don’t live by bread only; we live by every word that comes from God’s mouth.”
Reflection
That little word then stopped me in my tracks.
God let Israel hunger, then He fed them with manna. He let them taste lack, then He gave them something completely new, something no one had ever seen before. The hard time was real, but it was not the end of the story.
This is God’s pattern through Scripture:
- Job was afflicted, then God restored him double.
- Jesus died on the cross, then God raised Him in glory.
- Israel wandered in the wilderness, then God led them into the land He promised.
And this has been true in my life too.
He allowed my divorce, then He became my husband, my comforter, the One who showed me I do not depend on any person. I depend on Him.
He allowed seasons of financial lack, then He became my source and provider.
He allowed heartbreak, then He healed my heart and showed me He alone holds it safely.
The Equation of God
When I look at this pattern, it feels almost like a spiritual equation:
Hardship allowed + God’s “then” = Provision and Revelation
Every trial followed by a then reveals a new side of God. Each lack becomes an invitation to meet Him with a new name: Provider, Comforter, Healer, Sustainer. It is not about punishment but about relationship. He allows so that He can reveal. He humbles so that He can provide. He withholds so that He can pour out something better than we imagined.
A Confirming Word
This week Pastor John Hannah spoke a word about worship and knowing who God is. His reminder was that worship is not just about singing but about recognizing the character of God in every season. When I heard that, I knew God was speaking again, confirming this very message. He wants us to see how He reveals Himself in the middle of what we face. Every trial becomes another chance to worship Him for who He shows Himself to be.
Application
As I step into this month of September, I am choosing not to figure everything out. Instead, I am waiting in anticipation. God is preparing a table for me. The trial is not the end. The then is coming.
He is my manna. He is my I AM. He is everything I need, my substance, my source, my time, my resource. Nothing more, nothing less.
And I am thankful.
